Deep Learning for Logo Detection: A Survey
When logos are increasingly created, logo detection has gradually become a
research hotspot across many domains and tasks. Recent advances in this area
are dominated by deep learning-based solutions, where many datasets, learning
strategies, network architectures, etc. have been employed. This paper reviews
the advance in applying deep learning techniques to logo detection. Firstly, we
discuss a comprehensive account of public datasets designed to facilitate
performance evaluation of logo detection algorithms, which tend to be more
diverse, more challenging, and more reflective of real life. Next, we perform
an in-depth analysis of the existing logo detection strategies and the
strengths and weaknesses of each learning strategy. Subsequently, we summarize
the applications of logo detection in various fields, from intelligent
transportation and brand monitoring to copyright and trademark compliance.
Finally, we analyze the potential challenges and present the future directions
for the development of logo detection to complete this survey

Brown Adipose Tissue Activation Is Inversely Related to Central Obesity and Metabolic Parameters in Adult Human
Background: Recent studies have shown that adult human possess active brown adipose tissue (BAT), which might be important in affecting obesity. However, the supporting evidence on the relationship between BAT and central obesity and metabolic profile in large population based studies is sparse. Methodology/Principal Findings We studied 4011 (2688 males and 1323 females) tumor-free Chinese adults aged 18-89 for BAT activities, visceral/subcutaneous fat areas (VFA/SFA), waist circumferences (WC) and metabolic parameters. We found that the prevalence of BAT was around 2.7% in our study participants, with a significant sexual difference (5.5% in the females vs. 1.3% in the males; p<0.0001). BAT detection was increased in low temperature and declined in elderly subjects. The BAT positive subjects had lower BMI (P<0.0001), less SFA (P<0.01), VFA (P<0.0001), WC (P<0.0001), lower fasting glucose and triglyceride levels (both P<0.01) and increased HDL cholesterol concentrations (P<0.0001), compared with the BAT negative subjects. Robust logistic regression revealed that after adjustment for covariates (including age, sex, BMI, VFA, SFA and WC), age and BMI in the males (0.92 [95%CI, 0.88-0.96] and 0.84 [95% CI, 0.75-0.96], both P ≤0.008) while age and VFA in the females (0.87 [95%CI, 0.83-0.91] and 0.98 [95%CI, 0.97-0.99], respectively, P<0.05) were independently associated with detectable BAT. Conclusions/Significance: Our data suggest that decreased amount of active BAT might be associated with accumulation of visceral fat content and unfavorable metabolic outcomes
Preliminary investigation of the diagnosis and gene function of deep learning PTPN11 gene mutation syndrome deafness
Syndromic deafness caused by PTPN11 gene mutation has gradually come into the public’s view. In the past, many people did not understand its application mechanism and role and only focused on non-syndromic deafness, so the research on syndromic deafness is not in-depth and there is a large degree of lack of research in this area. In order to let the public know more about the diagnosis and gene function of deafness caused by PTPN11 gene mutation syndrome, this paper used deep learning technology to study the diagnosis and gene function of deafness caused by syndrome with the concept of intelligent medical treatment, and finally drew a feasible conclusion. This paper provided a theoretical and practical basis for the diagnosis of deafness caused by PTPN11 gene mutation syndrome and the study of gene function. This paper made a retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 85 deaf children who visited Hunan Children’s Hospital,P.R. China from January 2020 to December 2021. The conclusion were as follows: Children aged 1–6 years old had multiple syndrome deafness, while children under 1 year old and children aged 6–12 years old had relatively low probability of complex deafness; girls were not easy to have comprehensive deafness, but there was no specific basis to prove that the occurrence of comprehensive deafness was necessarily related to gender; the hearing loss of patients with Noonan Syndrome was mainly characterized by moderate and severe damage and abnormal inner ear and auditory nerve; most of the mutation genes in children were located in Exon1 and Exon3, with a total probability of 57.65%. In the course of the experiment, it was found that deep learning was effective in the diagnosis of deafness with PTPN11 gene mutation syndrome. This technology could be applied to medical diagnosis to facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of more patients with deafness with syndrome. Intelligent medical treatment was also becoming a hot topic nowadays. By using this concept to analyze and study the pathological characteristics of deafness caused by PTPN11 gene mutation syndrome, it not only promoted patients to find diseases in time, but also helped doctors to diagnose and treat such diseases, which was of great significance to patients and doctors. The study of PTPN11 gene mutation syndrome deafness was also of great significance in genetics. The analysis of its genes not only enriched the gene pool, but also provided reference for future research
FoodFab: creating food perception illusions using food 3D printing
Food 3D printing enables the creation of customized food structures based on a person’s individual needs. In this paper, we explore the use of food 3D printing to create perceptual illusions for controlling the level of perceived satiety given a defined amount of calories. We present FoodFab, a system that allows users to control their food intake through modifying a food’s internal structure via two 3D printing parameters: infill pattern and infill density. In two experiments with a total of 30 participants, we studied the effect of these parameters on users’ chewing time that is known to affect people’s feeling of satiety. Our results show that we can indeed modify the chewing time by varying infill pattern and density, and thus control perceived satiety. Based on the results, we propose two computational models and integrate them into a user interface that simplifies the creation of personalized food structures
Efficacy of metformin targets on cardiometabolic health in the general population and non-diabetic individuals: a Mendelian randomization study
BACKGROUND: Metformin shows beneficial effects on cardiometabolic health in diabetic individuals. However, the beneficial effects in the general population, especially in non-diabetic individuals are unclear. We aim to estimate the effects of perturbation of seven metformin targets on cardiometabolic health using Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS: Genetic variants close to metformin-targeted genes associated with expression of the corresponding genes and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) level were used to proxy therapeutic effects of seven metformin-related drug targets. Eight cardiometabolic phenotypes under metformin trials were selected as outcomes (average N = 466,947). MR estimates representing the weighted average effects of the seven effects of metformin targets on the eight outcomes were generated. One-sample MR was applied to estimate the averaged and target-specific effects in 338,425 non-diabetic individuals in UK Biobank. FINDINGS: Genetically proxied averaged effects of five metformin targets, equivalent to a 0.62% reduction of HbA1c level, was associated with 37.8% lower risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) (odds ratio [OR] = 0.62, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.46-0.84), lower levels of body mass index (BMI) (β = -0.22, 95% CI = -0.35 to -0.09), systolic blood pressure (SBP) (β = -0.19, 95% CI = -0.28 to -0.09) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) levels (β = -0.29, 95% CI = -0.39 to -0.19). One-sample MR suggested that the seven metformin targets showed averaged and target-specific beneficial effects on BMI, SBP and DBP in non-diabetic individuals. INTERPRETATION: This study showed that perturbation of seven metformin targets has beneficial effects on BMI and blood pressure in non-diabetic individuals. Clinical trials are needed to investigate whether similar effects can be achieved with metformin medications. FUNDING: Funding information is provided in the Acknowledgements
